The Lost and Hidden Heraldry of
St Nicholas Cathedral, Newcastle upon Tyne.

St. Nicholas has been a Cathedral since 1882, however there has been a church on the site for 900 years. Because of this St. Nick's has become one of the finest repositories of our Heraldic heritage in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne. Unfortunately this repository has not gone unscathed. 'Modernisation' schemes have taken their toll and a lot of the heraldry that was recorded in the cathedral in the 1820's has been lost to view. Some, such as tomb stones, are hidden beneath pew and carpets. If you walk up the central isle of the nave you can see and feel them under foot. A number of the wall monuments were scrapped and finished up as hard-core in surrounding buildings. This page lists those losses.

In companion pages to this I have recorded the present heraldry to be found in the cathedral, the Cathedrals Roof Bosses and the Choir screen . A further page giving an introduction to Heraldic terminology is also available.

If there is anything you wish to discuss about Heraldry in Newcastle upon Tyne please feel free to contact me at:

As with all such things a visit to the Cathedral is always the best way to appreciate its true beauty. If you do visit let me know what you think of the place.

Introduction.

A few words of explanation are needed before you proceed as to how this page works. In the list of blazons ___, represents an unknown tincture; (?) means that I am not sure about this entry. In the References section p gives the page number, pt gives the plate number. Full references are given at the end of the list.
In some of the drawings, where tinctures are not known, light and dark greys have been used to differenceate the charges.
