The Willsborough Mystery Plays.
adapted by

Martin Collins.

Introduction to the Willsborough Mystery Plays.

I first became aware of Mystery Plays when I was at school. It being a good Catholic secondary modern school religion was rather high on its scale of priorities. So, every few years some zealous young teacher decided that it would be a noble and Christian thing to put on a Passion Play. Now usually these events were organised by people with a very strong sense of religion but absolutely no theatrical savvy. I was lucky. In the year I had to suffer the school passion play the teacher who took on the play actually knew what he was doing. As a result, although the play was very religious and without a single scrap of humour (intentional humour that is) the play was actually a very good piece of theatre. I mention the humourlessness because I brought this up when we were discussing the Passion Play in our next religious instruction lesson. I wanted to know why the play, even the Marriage at Canna which was supposed to be a party, was so solemn. The teacher told us that it wasn't always the case and stuff like the old medieval mystery plays were quite jolly affairs.

Now you are probably thinking that those words sparked a flame of enlightenment within me that blazed into something special. Don't be bloody stupid. I was in my early teens and this was the 1960's. Unless you were talking the Stones, the Beatles or girls it wasn't relevant. Crap about funny religious plays didn't stand a snowballs chance in hell of permeating the seething vat of hormones and emotions that was the teenage me.

On the other hand something must have stuck because a number of years later, after I had discovered the wonderful world of Theatre, I also discovered the world of Mystery Plays. Exactly how I do not really remember but it had something to do with Heraldry and a TV program that showed "Noah and the flood". I had been doing a study of the achievement of arms of the various London Craft Guilds so I knew about them. The TV program said that these plays were performed by the Craft Guilds at Corpus Christie.

Something clicked somewhere. I did a bit of digging in the library and there they were. The York, Chester, Wakefield, Coventry and a whole load of other towns and cities, most with fragment but four complete cycles of plays. And what was more, they were funny. They displayed a joy of life that reached even the soul of the hooray old Pagan I had become.

I wanted more. I didn't just want to read them I wanted to be in there, acting in one. Unfortunately I lived in West London at the time and most productions of Mystery Plays happened ":t'up norf" as the saying goes. I even tried to get a job in York or Chester so as I could be in one. I actually got a job in Kent, which was even further from "t'norf". The God's, however, work in mysterious ways and in 1986 a Cycle of Mystery Plays was mounted in and around Canterbury Cathedral. For the first time in nearly 500 years the cloisters, knave and crypt of the Mother Church of England vibrated to the sound of a freely adapted (that is to say begged, stolen and borrowed) from the existing cycles and fragments. The three weeks in August that we performed in the Cathedral were magic and will be counted as a highlight of my life.

But all to soon it was over, until the next time. Delightful as the experience was, there was something stirring me up about the stories. Something was missing. Or at the very least not evident to my simple scientists mind. So, one day as I sat by the swimming pool of Why College, instead of going back to work in my hot smelly lab, I began to sketch out my vision of a mystery play. And it worked. It came together, couplet on couplet. Modern language for the most part (unless I couldn't find a rhyme then the olde Englishe came in handy). And so, over about six weeks, the Willsborough (that's the town in Kent where I was living at the time) Mystery plays began at the beginning, when through the middle and then ended up at the end, of everything. I had managed to put into it some of what I find problematic with Christianity. And I think it works as a story, even a play.

So that is where the following plays, after a great deal of editing and shuffling, came from. Where they go is another question. Maybe you would like to produce them. That's fine by me, send me a ticket for the last night and the after show party (a cut in any profits wouldn't be refused either) and it's all yours. If you just read them please let me know what you think about them. So all the best to you and my e-mail address is:-

Act I.

1. BEGINNINGS.

Characters.
			Jack-o-bin God male(m) & female(f)
			Lucifer Baalith
			Lillith Adom
			Eve Guardian Angle
			4 Angles Angelic Host.

People have been drifting into the auditorium with the audience. When ready Jack-o-bin begins proceedings.

Jack-o-bin.
Good friends and neighbours listen here
And to my tidings lend an ear
For on this day our masters good
Men most upstanding t'is understood
Have, in seance of much degree
Given voice to a great decree
That in this place and at this time
Shall be Mummers, Musicians and mime
To bring to all who gather round
Fine stories in the good book found
Then each in solemn merriment
Shall tell these stories heaven sent
For us to wonder at.

There are loud cheers and much doing of preparations which are interrupted by a loud piercing sound and a dimming of the lights. God male and female enters.

God-m/f.
I am the Alpha, I am the omega
The first and most famous.
In my will it shall be so
As is, as was, as ever shall be
I am that god that had no beginnings
Nor will have end.
Maker unmade, all might is in me
For I am the light of the life eternal.

Since I am the maker unmade
The one who is endless,
Unto my dignity I will create
A place full of my delight
A heaven without ending in my eye.
Within this place of comely creation
Shall I create now for my pleasure
Nine orders of Angles bright
To be ever in attendance.

The nine orders of Angle enter singing.

My children, do your endeavours
In the knowledge of my dominion.
Sit you in celestial splendour safe
Giving only to me due lordation of Kingship
For I am whose majesty is forever.

Of all those I have created here about
Only one have I given splendour near my own
The very mirror of my joy and sight
And you are bearer of that light.
I name you Lucifer.

Lucifer.
Oh father, lord, my mind does swim
All powerful is your mighty whim
That made such as all we see.
In true humility I bend my knee
Calling as I do for all my kind
To follow suite so honour bind
As though we were but nought.

All the Angles follow Lucifer's lead and bow.

God-m/f.
The work that's done this day is good
All is clear and clean and bright
So to all my blessing I do give.
This time is happy in my sight.

Exits.

Angle 1.
This is great to live within such bliss.

Angle 2.
To right, let us praise his lasting love.

Angle 3.
We shall dwell ever more like this.

Angle 4.
To give celestial duty to him above.

Angle 5.
Greet all that comes as his devoted kiss.

Angle 6.
Through out all time it will be enough.

Lucifer.
In all this place now none is bright as me
So when light shines from out my head
It's no mere reflection you do see
But one of equal turn born and breed.

Here lays a golden throne vacant
Ready to take my glorious form
No other is there here a rival scant
My place there on should be the norm.

As s/he gets close to the throne God appears. Lucifer falls back fuming.

God-m.
Lucifer, my brightest child
I see you standing by my chair
Be warned you, and all my children,
That you should not touch my throne
While I am elsewhere bound.
I who have raised you to this great height
Can also cast you down again.
Such will be the case if pride,
Black in all its vilest forms,
Makes you venture to sit within my chair.

Lucifer.
Come on God, would we do that
Me, would I play the rat?
You are great God, the only one
We come no-where near your sun.

God-f.
These things I am glad to hear
But now I think I'll take a stroll
To see what wonders I have wrought
Within the glittering doorways of my mind.
Lucifer!

Lucifer.
Yes God.

God-m/f.
While I am gone I make you governor

To guard this place with your great light
Which in its way reflects only me.

Exits.

Lucifer.
What did he say, what did he say?
That I am the one left in charge.
So, therefore, as my dull fledged minions grey
Who can-not hope to rival my mirage
You'll bend you knee as if I were god this day
As I sit myself upon his chair so large.
Now worship me.

Angle 1.
Do me a favour Lucifer.

Angle 2.
We have more sense than that.

Angle 3.
You are no more than governor.

Angle 4.
A servant civil of Great Gods whim.

All Angels.
We will not bend our knees.

Lucifer.
Now look here you rotten lot
I'm in charge of this here spot
So what I'm telling you just once more
Is get that knee down on the floor.

Baalith.
Here mate, we could be on a winner here
Beneath his wing we'll have no fear.

Lillith.
I don't know, it's a dodgy deal
We may end up beneath Gods heal.

Baalith.
No, come on, follow me
We're on a winner, bend that knee.

Lucifer.
At least someone has some sense
Not just sitting on the fence.
Come my friends, stand by me
As I ascend my throne, you'll see.

Sits on the throne.

There you go a perfect fit
The proper place for me to sit
For I am brighter there by far
Than any ding-bat god-heads are.
Now where's his promised might
To cast us from our new found height?

God-m/f [Off].
Lucifer, I can see you.

Lucifer jumps out of the throne as God appears.

God-m.
Oh petty child who would not head my words

God-f.
Whose pride is so great to behold.

God-m.
I warned you of the fate of those

God-f.
Who dared to place themselves on high.

God-m/f.
As for you two fools.

Baalith.
Ah, well yes! I can explain! A dream,
Things are not quite what they seem?

God-m/f.
Hold your tongue foolish thing
Before it trips you over.

God-m.
Well Lucifer, even now you keep your pride.
Very well you asked for it

God-f.
A fiery pit I shall create
Where you and your two cronies
Will forever more reside.

The fiery pit appears.

Lillith.
You and your bright ideas
Now we've realised my worst fears.

Lucifer.
Shut your mouth that whining well
I can do without such things in hell.

Baalith.
You and your stupid plot
It's all your fault were in this spot.

Lucifer.
Just wait till I get hold of you
It won't be cold that turns you blue.

They are swallowed up by Hell.

God-m/f.
And so shall be the fate of all
Who place themselves over me.

God-m/f.
But so my Angles will not be turned,
New things I shall now create.
An Isle is made, I call it Earth.
Here now it sits within my whim
Void of form, no life within.

God-m.
To make this change I now divide
Half into light, the other dark.
Land from water now I split
Filling both with plant and beast
Each it's niche in the scheme I've planed
The one on the other for life depends.

God-f.
The work of these five days is good
But on this the sixth I shall create
My master work of Life on Earth.

God-m/f.
From this clay I mould and form
In every curve most like myself,
Arise my son who is the first.

Adom rises and stands ape like.

God-m/f.
Now take from me this breath of life
A new made soul that mirrors me.

Adom stands upright and looks around him.

Adom.
Lord, all powerful is your might
That moulds from mud so slight
A thing as I am in your sight.

God-m/f.
A companion I shall now create
Fashioned from your own rib.
Come forth woman, have your soul.

Eve rises and stands with Adom.

God-m/f.
Woman, see now the man who is your mate.
Tend together this garden fine
Caring for each plant and beast
So naming it for its true kind.

Eve.
Of all the beasts you have made
Only we have shapes that stayed
Near your shape God, what honour paid.

God-m.
This is so. And now my children
Six days have I laboured long
So now on this the seventh day
I will rest within my golden halls.

God-f.
And so, as you reflect myself
You will do things just the same.
Six days shall your tasks take you
Then on the seventh you will rest

God-m/f.
The better to commune with me.

Adom.
Good lord our god we give our thanks
For all that's marshalled in these ranks.

God-m.
Go now and explore this garden rich
I give you full dominion over all
So you may eat and drink sufficient to your need.

God-f.
But such dominion also does give duty
Be warned there is but one tree
Which sits within this garden fine
That is mine and mine alone.

God-m/f.
Do not eat of the fruit of this tree
Which stands at the centre of this land.

Eve.
We hear you lord and obey.

God and Angles Exit.

Eve.
Now husband we should also rest that way
For tomorrow we must work
At naming all that wonder or do lurk.
Or grow from out the ground.

Adom.
Good wife, you are quite sound
And what you say is quite right.
So let us lay in each ones sight
And sleep the darkness through.

They lay down together and sleep. There is a great smell of brimstone as Lucifer comes out of Hell.

Lucifer.
Arrggg. This hell is hot.

Baalith.
Yee Gods who turned the heating off
It's freezing here I'll get a cough.

Lucifer.
Shut up, fool.

Lillith.
Here, less of that. Although I do agree
He may be a fool for all to see
But to use his voice he is still free
So you just leave him be.

Lucifer.
Oh that I should be reduced to this
Who was the brightest star in heavens bliss
Stuck with these morons down in hell
And who has taken my place so well
As the apple of the godly eye?
Two pink and hairy apes. Oh my.
I hate them all!

S/he hits Baalith across the head.

Baalith.
What was that for?

Lucifer.
Because you are a fool, fool.

Baalith begins to cry on Lillith's shoulder.

Lillith.
Now see what you have done
There there, did the nasty devil hit diddiums.

Lucifer.
Oh good grief, pull yourself together
We have work this day to whether.
See here sleeping on the ground
Two who have been charged by god so sound
To tend this place and all its suite
But not eat of a certain fruit.
You!!

Lillith.
Who me?

Lucifer.
Yes you, worthless little worm
Go and work you evil turn
Upon the woman's fit and active mind.
There is little point in trying to find
The mans mind, only clay in there
And so still slow, dull beyond compare.

Lillith.
But what shall I do?

Lucifer.
Make her eat the fruit, fool.

Lucifer clips Lillith's ear.

Lucifer.
Now get on with it.

Lillith.
Eve. Eve. Wake up eve.

Eve.
Who's there, who calls me to awake?

Lillith.
Only me dear, hallow, chin-chin.
I saw you and hubby moving in
Thought I'd drop in for a chat with you
You know, welcome you to pastures new.
Lovely place you've got here dear.

Eve.
Yes, were lucky I can tell
To be housed in such a dell
By god so loving and so good
I'm pretty sure none else would.

Lillith.
Oh yes, a lovely god, generous to a fault
I bet he shares just everything he's wrought
And is found growing in this ground
Denies you nothing I'll be bound.

Eve.
Yes, all that's here I think
We can eat and we can drink.
Except, one tree he has denied to me
And Adom to, vouch safe to be.

Lillith.
Oh so that's his little game
The sly old fox has done the same
With every beast and every plant
That ever he created, it's a slant.
It's a little test he sets
The Angels all have placed their bets
On which dumb beast will work it out
It could be you, have no doubt.

Eve.
God was most insistent on that route,
About the eating of that fruit,
He said we would not like it.

Lillith.
A ploy no less, hell bent
To put you off the sent.
If you but eat but one little bite
And make Adom do so in your sight
All the knowledge of all the worlds,
Of good, of bad, of ner-do-wells
Will be made so crystal clear
That if ever it confronts you here
You'll know just what to do.

Eve.
Oh my friend that would be good
Yes, I think I should.
I'll pick and taste what is forbidden
So to reveal what was hidden.

Eve picks the fruit that is indicated by Lillith and takes a bite. There is an instant reaction in her.

Eve.
Adom. Husband. Wake up please!

Adom.
Good morning love, is breakfast on?
By heck I'd eat a horse,
That is, supposing of course,
The thing we give that name to
Is just as big as a kangaroo.

Eve.
Here husband, I have this fruit.

Adom.
No I don't think that's a horse
Still nothing ventured nothing forced.
Here eve, this looks like the fruit
Old god told us not to loot.

He takes a bite and full knowledge come to him.

Adom.
Eve. What have you done?
What have you made me do?
This is the fruit that god did say
Most particular in his way
That we were not to touch.

Eve.
I know, but a friend of mine
To whom I have been chatting fine
Said that he would not mind
That it was a test in kind,
To see if we were worthy.

Adom.
A test indeed it was quite sure
To see if he could trust us more
And all we did was go and break it
HELLS BELLS GIRL YOU ARE NAKED!!!!!

Eve.
And so are you my husband big,
Oh don't be such a prig.

Adom.
Let's hide ourselves, get out of sight
Before god does his rounds, right.
Maybe if were quiet enough
He'll pass on over these grounds rough.

They hide. God enters.

God-f.
Adom, Eve, where are you?
Why are you cowering there
Beneath the tree you could not shear?
Why hide yourselves from me?

Adom.
You see god we have no clothes on.

God-m.
And what is that to you or me?

Eve.
It's just not done to be so bold
In polite society so I'm told,
By those who'er in the know.

God-f.
Oh my children what have you done
Where is the fruit of my tree hard won?

Adom.
Yes Eve, where is Gods juicy fruit?
Perhaps some great hairy bruit
Stole it while we weren't looking.

God-m.
What happened Eve?

Eve.
It was her, she told me lies
Said we would rise in your eyes.
You'd be pleased that our initiatives
Shows we have a brain that lives.

God-f.
You again, I might have known.
A thorn in my side you've always been
Since you did try and take my throne.

Lillith.
Now hang on God I can explain.

God-m/f.
Be silent worm, vilest thing,
My very sight you vex.

God-m.
This day you have angered me
Beyond all things, all piety now despair

God-f.
From this day on, worm, on your belly
In the dirt and dust shall you crawl

God-m/f.
There reviled by all.

As God speaks Lillith is forced to the ground and begins to crawl.

Lillith.
Lucifer help me.

Lucifer.
Must I do everything myself
Well don't just stand there on that shelf
Pick her up, take her home.

Baalith picks up Lillith and Exits.

Lucifer.
Are you in a dizzy swirl
For your blue eyes boy and girl
God you are nothing more, nothing less
Than a silly old foolish mess.

God-m/f.
Lucifer my fallen star
I felt that you would not be far
Get you back to your hell
The proper place for you to dwell.

Lucifer.
One up to me I think God.

Exits.

God-m.
Now you my wayward kids,
What should I do with you?

God-f.
You betrayed the trust I gave
Because of this you 'll now feel pain.

God-m.
The knowledge that you have
Decrees that you must go from here

God-f.
To live your lives in knowledge full.
So From this garden now you go

God-m.
My trusted Angle to be you guide
From out this saddened place.

God-f.
Eve, as you it was who plucked the fruit
From out the tree and eat it first
From this day forth and ever more
Your place is set behind the man

God-m.
When your children you do bear
Pain and suffering shall be your lot.
Now go from here for I must plan
How to clean your sin from man.

God exits. And Angel enters.

Angel.
I must now take you from this place
But first cover your saving grace
Make aprons from these fig tree leaves
To cover you from waste to knees.

Adom.
This work is done Angle bright
Come, lead us both into the night.
Wife, God said to follow me
But take my hand and we will see
What future is in store.

They put on their fig leaves and hand in hand are lead by the Angle from the garden which descends into darkness.

ANNUNCIATION.
Characters.
			Jack-o-bin God male(m) & female(f)
			Gabriel Mary
			Joseph Elizabeth
			Woman Man
					Angelic host.

Jack-o-bin.
Many, many years passed on by
Wow, how they do seem to fly
Many a prophet came and went
All great folk, heaven sent
They told the world of things to come
And now's that time these things are done.

God and Gabriel Enter.

God-m.
My Angle Gabriel good and true
Take my message to yon virgin girl
Who is my choice to bear my son
Redeemer of that world.

Gabriel.
I cry my joy at what I've heard
This thing begins his faithful life
Which brings the promise of your word
So close to its fulfilment. .

Mary is sitting alone sewing. Away from her are two older women working, one very pregnant. Gabriel appears to Mary.

Gabriel.
Hail Mary, who is full of grace
Great God, our lord is with you.
Above all women you are placed.
Gods son you will conceive.

Mary.
Why me?

Gabriel.
You are a virgin pure.

Mary.
I wonder that such great honour should
Descend on my unworthy womanhood.
As god in his wisdom, has chosen me
From this honour I will not flee
Even though the idea my mind does bend
It is so very hard to comprehend.

Gabriel.
You need look no further to see God might
Than to Elizabeth your cousin good,
Who, though grey of head and long in years
Does bear a child full term.

Elizabeth stand showing herself pregnant.

Mary.
It is true that she for years desired
Conception of a loving child
So God, our lord, in his good way
Has made her happy you say.

Gabriel.
As is with her so will be with you
But where her husband sired her child
God himself will fill your womb
With a boy who shall be Jesus.

Mary.
All things I do accept as great gods line.
Let all that has been said this day fine
Be done at his own will, and mine.

Mary waits with her eyes closed. God-m enters, kisses her on her forehead and her hand then exits.

Mary.
I feel Gods work begin within my womb.

Gabriel.
Now join your cousin and her friend
Await with them your husband soon
Who has been far off many days
But now his journey home he makes.

Gabriel exits. Mary joins the two women. Joseph enters.

Joseph.
Hay-ho, I'm home.
Open the door and let me in
I've walked so far my shoes are thin
My feet are killing me.

Woman.
Who's there at this time of night
Putting all the house to fright?

Joseph.
Stop messing about and where's my wife
The very light of my own life.

Mary comes to the door. She is very pregnant.

Joseph.
Ahhh, good wife gentle and mild
Oh my God you are with child!!
Deceitful woman who I thought good
I never believed that you could
Do such a thing while I was gone.
Another man where I belong.

Mary.
Good husband please listen here to me
Things are not what they may seem to be
No-one of this Earth gave me this babe
But God himself this child me gave.

Joseph.
God! GOD! Now come on girl
Do all my brains here unfurl?
Am I so dim that I would think
That God himself is here a link?
No, your deceit has hurt me so
And now from you I quickly go.

Joseph leaves Mary so he can feel sorry for himself.

Mary.
Great God in heaven help me please
My husband anger help me freeze
Show to him your great truth
Then set him back beneath this roof.

Gabriel appears to Joseph.

Gabriel.
Good fellow, why do you look sad?

Joseph.
My wife, my love, has turned out bad.
She bears a child that's not my own.

Gabriel.
No, It comes from Gods grate throne.
He has sent me here and now
To make you see just how
He chose your wife to bear his son
The thing she did was not her fun.

Joseph.
Angle bright are these things true
That god will be born anew?

Gabriel.
It is all true.

Joseph.
Then home I go, fee-ue.
Mary, Mary, Oh wife of mine
All the world is simply fine.
That I am wed to Great Gods choice
To wondrous joy I give great voice.

They embrace and exit.

Jack-o-bin.
From the Imperial seat of Rome
Came a decree to get on home
Augustus Caesar wants to know
Every little ebb and flow
Within his empire full of men
So Mary and Jo go to Bethlehem.

Joseph and Mary enter dressed for travel.

Joseph.
Our journey to good David's city
Is very long and not to pretty
But when the Romans call us there
The journey we will have to bear.

Mary.
Do not fuss so husband mine
I'll be all right, I'm fine.

Joseph.
Then sit upon this fine strong ass
Careful now, yes, there's my lass.

They make their way with Joseph leading the Donkey.

Mary.
Husband dear, I have a craving
For sweet bright cherries my hunger staving
Will you fetch them here for me
From the yonder Cherry tree.

Joseph.
Wife we have no time to tarry here
There'll be no room left I fear
If cherries you do want to eat
Let him who gave you child complete
Give you your hearts desire.

Mary.
Father of this child of mine
May I have Cherries sweet and fine.

The Cherry tree lowers its branch to Mary offering her its fruit. Joseph watches aghast.

Mary.
I thank you God in heaven far
For these Cherries, good they are.

Joseph.
Sweet wife forgive me for my fit of peek
I did forget you are unique
And that the father of that boy
Would answer you and give you joy.

They continue on.

Joseph.
It would seem that I was right
There is no room for us this night.

A man enters.

Joseph.
Ho friend, for friend you are indeed
If you can help us in our need.
My wife is close to her full term
We have no hath a fire to burn.
Can you help us out?

Man.
Each place I know is full to brim
Not an inch there within.
But as your wives need is great
There is a barn beyond that gate
The straw is clean and fresh today
In it you are welcome here to stay.

Mary.
Husband dear it will have to do
My minutes left are very few.

Joseph.
Thank you friend for your kindness
Now we will go for our rest.

They go to the barn.

Mary.
Help me to descend this noble beast
Then go tend him, let him feast
While I must do what women know
My waters are about to flow.

Joseph goes off to tend the Donkey while Mary gives birth. When she is done she brings the child forward for all to see. There is a flourish of Angelic voices as the barn fills with heavenly light. Joseph joins them.

Mary.
My husband, behold our new born son
With in whose life all will be redeemed
For he alone is the chosen one.

Angels sing as all exit.

3. The SHEPHERDS.
Character.
				Coll Gib
				Daw Mak
				Jill Angle
				Joseph Mary
				Lucifer Baalith
				Lillith Angelic host.

Enter three Shepherds.

Coll.
By heaven this night is cold
I wish I had something hot to hold.

Daw.
This bitter wind does blow a gale
I wish I had some good hot ale.

Gib.
Can all that you two do is moan
Miserable pear, you make me groan
We are here to care for sheep
Be-sure their safety in our keep.

They begin to settle down for the night. Tuneless singing is heard off.

Daw.
What's that noise that's reached my ear
It's getting closer to us here.

Gib.
What ever it is it ain't in tune
To make it stop would be a boon.

Daw.
That voice I think I do recall
The nerve of him, the bear faced gall.
If that's not Mak I'll eat my hat
Now watch it lads he's a right old rat.

Mak enters singing loudly and out of tune. He wears a bright new cloak over tatty clothes.

Gib.
High-ho Mak, what you doing here,
Thought you'd be out on the beer.

Coll.
By all that's holy you look dapper
Like a well turned out dogs platter.

Mak.
Watch it, watch it, mind the shummter
This ain't just common bread and butter.
I am now a yeoman of the king
With all authority that does bring.

Daw.
Who d'you think your kidding Mak
You'll be in trouble if that's not back.
I think at least an ear you'll louse
A rusty knife I hear they use.

Mak.
Give over with that talk will you guy
The words you say make my stomach fly.
I've had enough, my guts are aching
No food I've had since last weeks waking.

Coll.
But I thought you now served the King
And everything that that does bring.

Mak.
I do, I do.
But I also have a wife
Who causes me so much strife.
Every year a babe she gives me new
And some years even two.
Then she, and they, do eat all I take home
Is it any wonder that here I roam.

Gib.
Well friend Mak you may stay here
Though your reputation is quite clear.

Mak.
Oh me, oh my, what can you mean
My friend, my honour is quite clean.

Gib.
Then come and rest with us
And we will never cause a fuss.

They settle down to sleep. Mak makes a great show of a gibberish prayer then pretends to sleep. After a while he get up.

Mak.
Do they sleep?
Are they dead, as it were, to this world?
Can my plan now be unfurled?
But first my friends I will make sure
You will stay there on the floor.
Ring around I cast so fine
Drawing here a magic line
Where with in you three shall sleep
Your long nights vigil so to keep.
Now I'll go and seek my fill
Aworking my dastardly will.
A good fat lamb will do me well
I'll fill my tum, well what the hell.

He singles out a lamb and tries to catch it. When he finally succeeds he runs off home.

Mak.
Wife. Open up. Let me in I say.

Jill.
Who's that there this time of night, be away.

Mak.
It's me, Mak, your husband dear
There is nothing here to fear
Just open up and let me in
What I've brought will make you grin.

Jill.
What have you got that bleats like that?

Mak.
A lamb dear that's good and fat.
Till we have time to deal with it
It must be hid, where will it fit?

Jill.
Place it in this empty cot
It will do as good as not
If anyone should ask what's there
We'll say a new born baby fair.

Mak.
Finest kind that's what I say
Now, if we wish to make this pay
I must return to where sheep herds
Still are bound beneath my words.

Mak returns to the shepherds and takes his place amongst them. Morning comes.

Coll.
Morning already, what a sleep
Not once did I need to count sheep.

Gib.
A finer kip I haven't had for years
I feel like giving three loud cheers.

Daw.
Hang about, where's our friend Mak
If he's gone then sheep we'll lack.

Gib.
Never fear, still he sleeps so sound
As if he's planted in the ground.
Come on you lazy tyke,
It's time you were on your bike.

Mak.
Oh dear, was I sleeping so deeply then?
A contented soul within its pen
And dreaming of such lovely things
Hear my rested heart, it sings.

Coll.
We must to work our sheep to tend
So fair you well good old friend.

Mak.
A moment, before I go I would it be
That you do make a search of me
Just to make it all quite clear
That I have been by you near
So not removed a fat plump lamb,
That I'm as honest as I say I am.

Mak offers himself to be searched and the three frisk him.

Gib.
Okay Mak we're satisfied
A lamb in there you did not hide.

Mak bows and walks nonchalantly away at first then runs home to Jill.

Coll.
Well my friends let's get to work
We don't have time to sit a shirk
These sheep of ours we have to check
Then have a brew up on the deck.

They scatter counting the sheep. One is missing.

Daw.
Friends come quick and hear me say
A good fat lamb has gone astray
For when I came to count the meat
I did miss its plaintiff bleat.

Gib.
This is Mak's work to be sure
Come we'll go break down his door
So to release our fine lamb
Then truss him up like old smoked ham.

They exit. Mak joins his wife.

Mak.
Oh Jill, it was so easy.

Jill.
It all does sound terrific fun.

Mak.
Though I say this thing myself
Such gentle skills should raise our wealth.
At no time did I have to run
To gain for us this woolly son.
Enough of this my bellies empty
Good hot vittles I need a-plenty.

Jill.
Then we will have to butcher this
If we're to have such vittled bliss
For nothing else is in the house
That ere would even feed a mouse.

Mak.
For what other reason did I bring
This good fat woolly mutton thing?

They make to get the lamb from the cot when they hear the shepherds coming.

Coll.
Mak, where are you Mak?
It's no use hiding in your shack
We want a little word with you
And if your lucky maybe two.

Mak goes to the door and the shepherds puss past him. They begin to search the house. Jill sits rocking the cot.

Mak.
My friends, you are most welcome here
To my abode a welcome cheer.
What is it you seek my friends
Can I help you to your ends?

Daw.
You know full well what we are after
I suppose it's filled you both with laughter.

Jill.
Good sirs, I do not understand
All we have is here at hand.

They finish searching.

Gib.
Not a sign of a sheep
It's enough to make a fellow weep.
It seems we have misjudged you Mak.

Coll.
But what is there beneath this sack?

Mak.
That is my child just newly born.

Jill.
From my womb so newly torn.

Daw.
Aren't we to see this new born child
Whose gentle gur-gals are so mild?

Jill.
His gentleness is due to sleep
But when awake his voice does leap
It shatters all the peace around
With the volume of that sound.

Mak.
So if you wouldn't mind just now
Leave him be or there'll be a rough.
I'm sure you have some sheep to tend
So on your way you'll surly wend.

Mak ushers the shepherds out with mush relief. They do not go far.

Gib.
Did you give that child a birthday penny
So it can grow to many?

Coll.
In truth I did not do this thing
Bad luck on us that's sure to bring.

Daw.
Then back we go to give the boy
A token small that will bring joy.

They return to Mak's house and knock.

Coll.
Mak, we're back to bless his head.

Mak.
You can't. Be gone. The child is dead.

Gib.
Dead, who was so well just now
I scratch my head and wonder how.

Daw.
I smell a rat somewhere here
Not to mention lamb quite near.

They barge in.

Coll.
Then our condolences we do give
Foe loss of he who once did live
The body we would see ourselves
In case it dangers our own health's.

Daw whips off the cover and the lamb bleats loudly.

Daw.
My nose does say this is a sheep.

Gib.
My ear to that does also leap.

Coll.
My eye does picture many a thing
One of which a lamb does ring.

Daw.
Grab him lads.!!!!

They grab Mak and frog march him out. He and Jill protest loudly.

Daw.
Here we have a blanket handy
So we can toss you fine and dandy.

Gib.
Steel from us we'll show you how
We treat such things here and now.

Coll.
Okay lads on my shout
Into the air we toss the lout.

As they toss Mak the air is filled with Angelic light and voices. The shepherds drop Mak, he and Jill make their escape.

Angel.
Arise gentle herdsmen, good Yomen of this land
A wondrous thing has happened near at hand.
The saviour of all human kind
Is born this very day you'll find.
Take up gifts by what you are
And visit where there sits a star
A mother new with babe in arms
Amongst the beasts of poor men's farms.
You good men of lowly birth
Shall be the very first on earth
To see god's son made man.
To Bethlehem go now and sing
To honour there the new born king.

Angles exit singing.

Gib.
Did you just see what I just saw?
A host of Angels, oh law.

Coll.
I did, they were truly there
That didn't half give me a scare.

Daw.
They said that we should seek a king
Amongst the beasts they did sing.

Gib.
Then let us do what we've been told.
What a story for when we're old.

Coll.
Well I'm game if you two are
It's over there, it isn't far.

Daw.
Right then lads let us go
Before the weather turns to snow.

They exit. Mary, Joseph and the baby enter. They are between a Donkey and Cow and surrounded by Angels. The shepherds re-enter. They are nerves about approaching.

Mary.
Good friends I greet you true
As does my child born anew.
Come and see his loving face
Which will save the human race.

The shepherds come closer.

Coll.
Some bright Angels high
While we were dealing over nigh
Asked us to come and bring you things
So I give a thing that rings.

Gib.
For my part I haven't much
I'm often told I'm an easy touch
So I give you this bounce ball
Which you can play with up a wall.

Daw.
I give you a patchwork shawl
To keep you warm so you'll grow tall
Then as the Angles said so loud
You can redeem us miserable crowd.

Mary.
My friends these gifts are wonderful
We give you thanks one and all.

She stands and comes forward with the child. Lucifer, Baalith and Lillith sneak in round the back.

Mary.
Be sure that all that has been promised
Shall be fulfilled in this lads coming
For God, his father up in heaven
Did give his promise at Eden's gate
And all through time he has remembered.
Behold his son and our redeemer.

Lucifer begins clipping Lillith and Baalith round the ear and berating them loudly.

Lucifer.
Idiots, cretins, incompetent fools, berks.
Look what you've allowed to happen
Maggots, worms, horses do-do's.

God m/f enters. He goes to Lucifer.

God-m.
One up to me I think Lucifer.

Lucifer and cronies exit. God goes to where Mary stands She shows him the child, he smiles and exits to great singing of Angles.

Enter the 1st.King in full pomp.

1st. King.
Star that shone before so bright
Why have you now gone from my sight?
From eastern lands I did you head
To a new born king I let you lead
But unless you guide me there
I shall not find that baby fair.

Enter 2nd.King.

2nd. King.
Brother, I bid you joy as is our code
What makes your feet tread this road
Which many men have trod before.
Was it a light you could not ignore
That brought you to this cross-road near
Such is my part for being here.

1st.King
Yes my brother King so bright
I did follow such a light
Until it was put out of late
And now I know not its fate.

Enter 3rd.King.

3rd. King.
Such sights I never saw before
As these my brothers dressed in Kingly store
Discoursing at this crossing path.
What ails you brothers and your staff?

1st. King.
A star we followed from our home
Which lead us to a new kings throne
Has, without a warning, gone
And left us wondering what went wrong.

3rd. King.
So you too have read the stellar note
Between the Lion and the Goat.
But let us delay right here
For great king Herod's land is near.
So let us to this renowned king
Tell to him of what's coming.

2nd. King.
This seems a senseful thing to do
So lead on, we'll follow you.

Kings exit. Herod enter with Lucifer, Baalith and Lillith disguised as adviser and guards.

Lucifer.
Great King Herod I tell you true
That there light will do for you.

Herod.
What poppy-cock do you spout
Start talking sense or else get out.

Lucifer.
Strait up Herod my old son
This star is telling that the one
Who shall be King has come.

Herod.
Then we will have to deal with him
We'll make his chance of living mighty slim
And that there light forever dim.

Enter Page.

Page.
Good lord my King of Great redoubt
Three visitors do stand without
Each is noble in his birth
Their raiment's tell of their true worth.

Herod.
What's this you say to the royal ear
On your knees in abject fear
Don't they teach you things at school
Of how to address the King of all.

Page.
Not a word did they say
For I was always out at play
While teachers did demand more pay
If here they were going to stay.

Herod.
Cheeky brat, I'll tan your hide
Now go and tell those outside
We will receive them one and all.
Meantime I'll plot another's fall.

Lucifer.
Is this wise my noble lord
Giving audience to this barbarous hoard?

Herod.
If truly Kings these three be
They may be rivals unto me
So best we try and suss their game.
Put their numbers in the frame.

The Kings enter.

Herod.
Good day my brothers, welcome home
For this it is while you do roam
Come tell me what you seek
Then rest with me for the week.

1st. King.
Herod, noble lord and great King
Who's praise all around do sing
We thank you for your offer good
If we had time then stay we would
But our quest drives us fast
Which here about's ends at last.

2nd. King.
A star to each of us was shone
As each did warm his noble throne
It told us that a child was born
Who, in time, death would scorn.
That which lead us shone so bright
Until, that is, this very night.

3rd. King.
So to you our brother king
Our little problem we do bring.
Tell us if you have heard
Off sacred sine or telling word
Where we might find the new born one
Who we are told is Gods own son.

Herod [Aside]
This situation is tailor made
To help me make this star to fade.
Good friends, none of this has come my way
But, like you, homage I would pay
To this new born King so great indeed.
[Aside] I'll see the little sproglet bleed.
When you have found the child you've sought
Kindly, then friends, spare me a thought
And tell to me where he might be
So I may also bend my knee.

2nd. King.
These things we willingly will do
But now must bit farewell to you.

The Kings exit.

Lucifer.
What a man you are for sure
Who could ask for any more
To get these good and holy men
To gather up the fateful genn
Which will end that brats time
A plan of action so sublime.

Herod.
Oh do shut up.

Herod and Retinue exit. The Kings enter.

1st. King.
Look you there my good friends
Once more, the star, its light it sends.
No more do we need have a care
For it has settled over there.

2nd. King.
You are right it is the star
The place it rests a barn not far.
Is this in truth the place we seek
A place for beasts, with roof and leek?

3rd. King.
All the writings I have read
Have told me of the new born's bed
That it will be of lowly kind
Much lower than this we will not find
And sure the star is over head
This is the place to which it lead.

Mary.
Lord Kings you are most welcome here
We do humbly thank you clear
That you should honour us just so
Especially my son who you would know.

1st. King.
Sweet Madonna, mother of this king
It is for us an honoured thing.
And so to mark our deep respect
Fine gifts we each did collect.
Accept from me this gift of gold
Which is a Kingly right of old.

2nd. King.
As he shall dress in priestly weaves
I bring you finest incense leaves
The sweet and cleansing smock of same
Shall reach to heaven in his name.

3rd. King.
From my hand comes Myrrh so sour
To treat your wounds when comes your hour
As saviour of this world you be
Hung high upon that dreaded tree.

Mary.
Our thanks for these fine gifts we give
And know you well that he shall live
To use each one as you have said
As King, as Priest, as sacred dead.
For he is marked from all others
Merchants, Sailors, sons and lovers
To save us all from Adom's fall
So open heaven to one and all.

1st. King.
We must now return and tell
The things that we have found so well.

2nd. King.
Send out across all our land
The message of redemption's hand.

3rd. King.
So farewell Madonna and sweet sire
Our quest is filled, we now retire.

1st. King.
Come brothers, let us now to Herod go
Tell him of this stable low.
Then homewards each will travel far
No longer troubled by the star.

They start to go but an Angle appears to them.

Angel.
Good sirs, a message I do bring
From gods own lips did it fall
The man known as Herod the King
Should not from you receive a call
His only wish is to destroy
Increasing his own power grip
By the death of that sweet boy
From whose presence you did slip.
Go then home a different way
Avoid the evil Herod's face
Then, when you recall this day
Your quick flight from this place
What we did was right you'll say
Our actions were just ace.

The Kings exit. Herod enters in a flaming rage. Lucifer is in attendance.

Herod.
Where are they, where have they gone
I've been waiting over long
You did say this plan would work
Well speak up you stupid berk.

Lucifer.
My lord, did I say that?
Oh fiddle-de-de, Oh drat.

Herod.
Some adviser you've turned out
All huff and puff but no shout
Well what have you to suggest now
If it's not good then dungeons foul
Await you dripping clod and dark
It's how to deal with a failed bright spark.

Lucifer.
Yes, well, I think I know a way
A heavy price your people here will pay.
If you do slaughter every new born boy
The results can only give you joy.

Herod.
Yes. Yes I see your plan
Call out the guard, every man.

A troupe of guards enter. Baalith and Lillith acting as officer and sergeant.

Herod.
It has come to pass this dark day
A new born King has come to stay
As your king, the only one,
I give you tasks that must be done.
Go about throughout this land
And every child that comes to hand
If he be less than two years old
Kill him dead, make him clod.

Herod and Lucifer exit laughing.

1st.Guard.
Sergeant of our noble troupe
Has the King gone off his loop?
Did he say that we should slaughter
Every son of every daughter
Who is less than two years old.
Did this really just unfold?

Lillith.
You have your orders given you
Their not the first you did slew.

She goes to Baalith.

Lillith.
Captain, friend of many years
I feel like shedding many tears
Can our lord really mean
To do this thing so unclean.

Baalith.
The depth of a great mans vision
Is at work at this decisions
We will carry out this thing
All the streets with death will ring.
Guard, attention.
About turn.
By the left, quick march.

Baalith marches the disgruntled guard out.

Lillith.
Throughout the ages of this world
I have helped great evil be unfurled
But this action which now takes place
This vile attack on human race
Does turn my stomach right around.
Is this a conscience I have found?

She exits. Mary, Joseph and the baby are seen asleep. God wakes up Joseph gently.

God-f.
Joseph! Joseph my good friend
To what I say your ear lend.
Take up my son and your good wife
Flee this place, run for your life
Herod, King within this land
Has sent out a murderous band
An Angle with its brightest light
Will guide you through this evil night.

God exits. Joseph wakes Mary.

Joseph.
Mary my love, we must fly
Do not ask the reason why
Just gather up everything
Into bags it all sling
Do it now without delay
For in this place we can-not stay.

They gather their things together and leave with an Angle leading the way. All around them solders are at their bloody work but the Angle stands between them and the family. They exit. A group of women gather by Herod's palace.

1st.Woman.
King Herod save us please
See us plead on bended knees.

2nd.Woman.
My child is dead I understand
Because of orders from your hand.

3rd.Woman.
If this does not stop then have our curse
So your vile death shall be far worst.

Herod.
How come these women still have a kid
When I have ordered all be rid?
Sergeant go enact my will
And those there children kill.

Lillith.
Yes sir we will do it
While on your throne you sit.
Guards, impale these new-borns on you spear
So great King Herod their screams can hear.

The guards do as they are ordered accompanied by the women's screams. They place the corpse at Herod's feet He exits laughing, the women exit crying.

Guardsman
This blood filled day is drawing closed
The things I've done my blood has frozed
It is most evil and most bad
And has made us oh so sad.

Lillith.
You are a solder paid enough
To carry out your orders rough
We don't expect to hear you quibble
Hear you cry, see you dribble
Now get on with your work
And don't you let me see you shirk.

The guards exit very dejected.

Lillith.
What ever has happened here today
Has got to me in some odd way.
I must examine what this is.
Quiet mind, the boss won't like this.
I must seek some answers though
While these new feelings in me grow.

Lillith exits. Mary, Joseph and a grown Jesus get a visit from God.

God-f.
My children, your long exile here does end
Homewards now you can wend
For King Herod now has died
Wracked with pain and knotted inside.
So rise you up, to Nazareth return
And teach my son what he must learn.

God exits. The family heads home with great rejoicing.

Act II.

1. JOHN the BAPTIST.
Characters.
			Jack-o-bin John the Baptist
			Jesus God
					Crowd

Jack-o-bin.
Time, as often happened in this peace
Has moved on, it would, it does not cease.
Form the wilderness round Judea
A voice cried out for all to hear
The cousin of our noble lord
John this mans name is called.

John [off].
Repent. Repent your sins I say
Don't put it off, do it today
Come to the waters of our life
Let it wash away your strife
Don't be consigned to deaths wilderness
Repent your sins and find such bliss.
Come my friend, take this first pace
That will take you into grace
Within this water clean and bright
You'll be bathed in gods own light
Know you then of what I tell
Of one who'll drag you out of hell.
I am sent to tell you all
Of one whose old and broken shoe
We are not worthy to reach out for
But he will open up the door
And heaven will be ours once more.

People go to John for Baptism. One of them is Jesus. When John get to him he stops in wonderment.

Jesus.
Baptise me John as is prescribed
Here upon this river side.

John.
Me baptise you, Gods only son
Whose presence shows the time has come.
Oh lord of heaven this can-not be
Surly you should baptise me.

Jesus.
Each man, John, God gave his task
Do you really need to ask?
I am a man as well you see
And this body cleaned must be
So all can be fulfilled
Immerse me in this water chilled.

John Baptises Jesus. A shaft of light picks them out..

God-m/f [Off]
This is my beloved son
In whom I am well pleased.

Jesus.
Thank you for your work this day
Cousin, friend, I will now pray
Within these deserts all around
Where stones do litter all the ground.

John.
With my love I bid you well
Now in this world there sounds a bell
Which tells to all who wish to hear
The day of triumph is so near.

They embrace and exit.

2. TEMPTATIONS.
Characters.
			Lucifer Jesus
			Baalith Lillith
			Nobleman Adulterer
			Woman Disciples
					Crowd

Lucifer enters in a cloud of fire and brimstone.

Lucifer.
Year on year I've watched him grow
From boy to man his life did flow
In all that time he was so good
Not sinning like others would.
Now I've watched his latest game
Doing all in great Gods name
Forty days and forty nights
He has fasted on these heights
Now my chance has come along
While he's weak he will do wrong.
Oh man, you there, hark to me
If as you claim, God you be
Cure your hunger by turning stones
Into bread, or jam and scones.

Jesus.
Lucifer, what will it take,
What proposition shall I make,
So you will see that stone is stone
And man does not live by bread alone.

Lucifer.
Man what is this
Your answer is most amiss.
I do know your belly's empty
And you could create here plenty.

But hold, I must not lose my cool
Over the ways of that holy fool
But this dozey-beard I shall destroy
With every guile I can employ.

Man, Jesus come with me
Look out upon all you see
As we sit upon this spire
There is no vantage higher.
See all before you spread out fine
Some is yours, a lot is mine
Now cast yourself so strongly down
Come, there is no need to frown
For if, as you say, God you be
Your Angles, they will catch you, see.

Jesus.
What things do I have to prove
To one so vile God did remove
From out his holy sight
I need no test, our might is right.

Lucifer.
Once more I have failed to make
A morsel of this mans faith shake.
But I shall not be beat by him
With all my powers black and grim
I will be the Victor yet
And that's a strait odds bet.

Now man, look out across the city
On it I do take pity
If you would but once worship me
I will set all that free
Never more will I walk there in
Not once persuade them all to sin
All of this shall be your place
With you as King of every space.

Jesus.
Not for every city in the world
Each with banners full unfurled
Would I ever bend my knee
To one so loathsome here to me.
So now vile thing behind me get
Couse you have now just lost your bet
Return I say to fires that burn
Be sure that you do not return.

Lucifer is forced back into hell.

Jesus.
Such is the fate of all such folk
Who treat gods words as one big joke.
The mouth of hell is wide and deep
Its dreadful guardians never sleep.

He goes down to a gathering of people.

Jesus.
My friends I have these things to say
To help you travel my fathers way.
Blessed are the poor in spirit
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they that morn
For they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek
For they shall inherit the Earth.
Blessed are they who hunger after righteousness
For they shall be fed.
Blessed are the merciful
For they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure of heart
For they will see gods face.
Blessed are the piece makers
For they are the children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
When you are reviled and persecuted
If your cause be just then you are blessed.
Know now that much evil will come you way
If on this path you do walk.
But take it well rejoicing full
For great in heaven is your reward.

Jesus is mobbed by the crowd.

Jesus.
Come now my friends to a town
Where lives Lazarous', a friend of great renown
We shall visit with this man some time
At least until the church bells chime.

Jesus and followers exit leaving Baalith and Lillith behind them.

Baalith.
Hay my friend and bosom chum
I have a plan to make up some
For the bosses low defeat
A plan it is that's good and neat.
As Pharisee and Scribe we'll dress
The people all to impress
Then a challenge we'll give to him
And by its answer he'll sink not swim.

Lillith.
This plan of yours sounds just the thing
That cock-sure fellow down to bring
But have you given any thought
How he, to this can be brought.

Baalith.
There is a man oh friend of mine
Who rails against moral decline
His favourite theme is illicit sex
Just a whiff does him vex.
There is a woman close at hand
Who has a liaison planed
If we can get them all to meet
This Jesus' downfall will be fleet.

They exit. A nobleman enters. He is followed by Baalith and Lillith in disguise.

Baalith.
My word, what does come of this land
With lewd doings on every hand
I say in truth they were not married
Their guilt was so openly carried.

Nobleman.
Good sirs, I could not help by over hear
As I passed along quite near
Your comments made out loud and clear
About a couple who at the law do sneer.

Lillith.
Yes friend isn't it awful
That they should do these things unlawful
But then adultery seems to be the vogue
With women coupling with any rouge
They gave not a second thought
To the evil that they wrought.

Nobleman.
We must expose them with great haste
Come, there is not time to waste
Stoning does the law prescribe
For those who in adultery imbibe
So let us three go there now
To deal with them as we know how.

The three of them go to a doorway and begin to knock on it.

Lillith.
Out, out I say oh sinful ones
Your hour of judgement it now comes.

The door flies open and a large man scatters them.

Man.
If you think I'm staying here
Think again you'll see my rear
And any man who tries to stop me
I will cut from head to knee.

Nobleman.
Go then, get you out our way
We would not dream to make you stay.

Man makes his exit.

Nobleman.
His countenance was far to fears
And that sharp knife our hearts could pears.

Man.
My escape I've now achieved
I tell you I am much relived
For if those three had turned to fight
They'd have advantage of their might.
And me with trousers round my ankles
That was a thing that really rankles.

He exits.

Baalith.
Woman, sinful slut come out
Or I will come in and you rout.

He goes in and drags the woman out.

Now vile harlot, on your own
We shall, in law, you stone.

Woman.
Sirs, masters fine, I pray you mercy
Do not treat me tersely.
I have money, fine jewels I'll give
If you will only let me live.

Nobleman.
Silence woman, your sin is great
Do not compound them in this state.

He drags her to her feet and throws her away from him and into the path of Jesus.

Nobleman.
Get you to your execution
You vile horrendous moral pollution.

Baalith.
This is all going very well
Just the way I did tell
This Jesus now, he will butt in
And question us about her sin.
Then whatever thing he does next
Shall serve him ill which ever way
He chooses for this game to play.
If he says mercy we should show
To this harlot all to know
He brakes the law that Mosses wrote
And we will have him by the throat.
But if a stoning he does condone
Then to the winds his words are thrown
About the other cheek and that
Then we'll have him cold and pat.

Woman[to Jesus]
Sir, help me please
I beg you on my bended knees.

Jesus.
What ails this woman in this way?
Come sirs, tell me I pray.

Nobleman.
She is a vile adulteress.

Jesus.
How come I find her in this mess?

Nobleman.
I and my two friends near
Found her out sinning here.
The judgement of the law is such
That those found in adulteries clutch
Shall be killed by sharpened flints
Their blood, the sand gives reddish tints.

Baalith.
Gird yourself, this is it
The time we rub him in the shit.

Jesus.
Is what they say of you
Of your sinning ways, true?

Woman.
Oh gracious lord, these things I did
But for your mercy now I bid.

Jesus.
The law does say that you must die
Can you give me reason why
This sentence is not carried out
With you striped of dress and clout.

Woman.
No sirs, the laws decree
That stones shall put an end to me.

Jesus is handed a stone.

Jesus.
By her own words your suite is prove
So with this rock her head you'll stove.
But let the first be thrown by him
Who is entirely without sin.

Jesus offers the stone to Baalith who exits fast. Then to the Nobleman who is about to take it but thinks better offer it to Lillith who refuses it. She backs off, hiding around a corner watching.

Jesus.
Woman, where are they who did you accuse
Who wished with stones to you abuse?

Woman.
Gone. Here no more
But what have you for this whore.

Jesus.
There are none here that call you that
They did look on their souls black
Finding as they did much wanting
Learning that such judgement here
Can only be true justice found
When they who judge are clean of heart.
Now rise in joy, be on your way
Be sure as you sample life's great store
That you do sin no more.

He helps her to her feet and she exits dancing..

Jesus.
Come my friends we journey on
The road we travel is still long.

They exit..

Lillith.
Once more this Jesus has worried me
Shown to me a golden key
That in it's time shall turn'ed be.
But from such thoughts I must flee
Since Eden's gates and that tree
My sins are vaster than the sea
Bound as I am from head to knee
I can never now be free.
Yes, I have sinned, yet, so had she
He forgave her didn't he?

She exits.

3. LASARUS, the CHILDREN and MARY MAGDALINE.
Characters.
			Saira Jesus
			Marther Lasarus
			Peter Three children
			Man Mary Magdaline
			Judas John
					Crowd

A funeral procession crosses the stage a Jesus enters. Saira breaks away from the procession and goes to Jesus.

Saira.
Jesus, lord, your coming here
Will bring you only grief I fear
For at this time our friend Lasarus
Has been taken away from us
To his reward at heavens gate
To wait the Angles holy state.

Jesus embraces and comforts her.

Jesus.
Saira, woman good and true
You have no need for feeling blue
Come, take me to where he does rest
We'll find the answer that is best.

Saira takes Jesus to where Lasarus is laid out. He is greeted by other members of the family..

Marther.
Good friend you are most welcome.

Jesus.
But why do I hear the death tolls drum
Within this house where all is life
This sadness I could cut with knife.

Marther.
My husband Lasarus is dead
There was no flow when he was bleed.

Jesus.
I say to you that he does sleep
So there is no need to weep.

He prays a moment.

Jesus.
Lasarus. Lasarus come rise up
We two must shear a cup
That was promised long ago
Is this hospitality you do show?

There is a movement in Lasarus and he returned to life. Jesus helps him to his feet..

Lasarus.
What strangeness is there here
I felt that death was near.
Then from out a darkened cave
My name came wave on wave
Till I was torn in two
Should I go or return to you.
Then through those misty waste
I began to gather pace
Following a voice I knew
Until I almost flew.
Then open came my eyes at last
I knew that all I said was past.

Jesus.
From out of death I called you
Into a life that is now new.
Know you friends what I have done
To this man, this mortal one,
I shall do to myself
With no more power, no more wealth
Than what my father gives to me
To save all men, to set them free.

There is a hub-bub of children playing and being a nuisance to the adults.

Peter.
Be quiet kids, do you not know
Degrees respect that you should show?

1st. Kid.
But we just want to see.

2nd. Kid.
Why can't we take a look?

3rd. Kid.
Why can't he talk to us?

Jesus.
Peter, let then come through
For what they have to say is true
In the very innocence of their way
With them, things are new each day.

Come my little friends sit with me
And tell me what your names would be.

The children group around Jesus and each in turn tells their name.

Peter.
Master, is this a seemly thing to do
When many clamour after you?

Jesus.
Well my friend bring them in
Let them see, let them grin
Then I shall tell them words so true
They'll probably shake even you.

Jesus starts a game of tag with the children as Peter goes off to show the people in..

Man.
I heard of a great teacher here
A man who was to end our fear
What do we find but a big school kid
Is this the one who'll make a bid
To rid us of oppression yoke
This man is nothing but a joke.

Jesus.
Friends, good masters all
When the end of time does call
Unless you are as these you see
Yes, the children who do play with me,
Then heavens gate to you is closed
The fires of hell will be imposed
For God our father will not accept
Unless to childhood you've back stepped
To embrace his truth with childlike faith
Only then will you be safe.
Now come little friends of mine
A job we have to do so fine
Pick a partner from the crowd
So we can teach them good and loud
Fun games that we all play
To make the devil go away.

The children scatter and drag an adult into the play area where a follow and do game takes place. As many people from the audience as possible are involved. Mary Magdaline enters and watches.

Mary Magdaline.
I stand here and watch the play
A thing of low esteem they say
I must always be, from them, apart
For many are the sins that stain my heart.
Used as I am by any man
As he plays sire to my dam.
But there, within the midst of that game
A man does stand beyond all others name
He holds out for me a glistening jewel
That pays not for my bodies fuel
But fills my soul with purity
Offering me security.
Can he forgive one such as I?

She throws herself at the feet of Jesus ending the game..

Mary Magdaline.
Jesus, lord and master, help me
I beg you let me also see
You look with mercy and with love
Upon this one who you are so above.
The listing of my sins are long
I do know I have done wrong.
Allow me to anoint your holy feet
And with this action you greet.

She anoints his feet and wipes them with her hair. There is a rumble of discontent from the crowd. Jesus helps Mary to her feet.

Jesus.
Woman, you do me honour far to great
I don't deserve your humble state.
I can forgive in great God's name
Any sins that you do claim
If you indeed do repent
Then your salvation is heaven sent.
I can see there in your eyes
That your repentance are not lies.

Judas.
Now there's a thing that meats our eye
While all around us poor do die
You let that oil from far off lands
Anoint your feet by a harlots hands
When we could turn it into money
So give the poor a taste of honey
Much meat and drink it would have brought
But now it shall return us nought.

Jesus.
Judas, the poor are with us ever one
But what this woman here has done
Will give her honour in God's eyes
To her his mercy will fly.
But come my friends my time is close
The bastions of the city stand morose
But we shall conquer even that
In fathers name that is a fact.
Go, two of you, to the city wall
Where an ass is tethered in a stall
Bring it to us, go, be fleet
So our conquest can be complete.

Peter.
Come John let us seek
This Donkey tethered there so meek.

John.
Faster than a wind blown seed
Will we find that noble steed.

Peter and John exit. Jesus makes his good-byes and he exits with Mary and disciples..

4. the PLOT.

Characters.
				Lucifer Annas
				Baalith Lillith
					    Judas

Enter Annas with Lucifer, Baalith and Lillith disguised.

Lucifer.
But my lord Annas you are the law
And it is flouted by this man of straw.

Annas.
I know full well what is my job
Do not, of me, my knowledge rob.
I am charged to protect the law
That all of Jewery knows what for
But this Nazarene, Jesus is his name
Now breaks the rules of our game.

Baalith.
Then we must search throughout the law
Both Caesar's and the ancient score,
Then find someone who knows him well
So lead him down the path to hell.

Lillith.
Beware my friends, I must remind you
That within law we must work to
If over stepped by just one jot
Our plans are ended, we lose the lot.

Lucifer.
What are you saying, stupid Triv,
What care of law should we give
And if we pick up souls along the way
It is what makes our days pay.

Annas.
The council you give is true, much thanks
We must take this subject to higher ranks
Therefore to Caiaphas we shall wend
He will know which laws to bend.

Mean while you two seek out Judas
Before this plan does elude us.
He was once a pupil of mine
Although his mind was bright and fine
Doubt did often wrack him.
Work on that and he we'll win.

Annas and Lucifer Exit.

Baalith.
What is wrong with you these days
I do not understand your ways
Whenever some willing soul we find
Who in brimstone we can grind
You cry off all namby-pamby
What's wrong, come on, you can tell me.

Lillith.
I wish I knew how to tell.
Ever since that time we fell
We have worked here as a team
The best that there has ever been
But since this Jesus has been born
Now look, don't treat this with scorn,
But in me something's do change
I don't understand, it is most strange.

Baalith.
What a lot of hog-wash.
I've never heard such tosh.
We are here for evil work
And that's the job we will not shirk.
Now pull yourself together fast
For that is Judas walking past.

Judas enters very troubled.

Judas.
The things of which Jesus speaks
Have troubled me for many weeks.
He challenges the Jewish law
But Caesar who I do abhor
He does not challenge saying such
Render to him moneys much.
Instead of righteous folk we've found
He speaks with sinners, prostitutes abound.
How can this give to this our nation
The thing we seek, its liberation?

Baalith.
It can-not do so.

Judas.
What, how did you know.?

Baalith.
Your thoughts were spoken loud.

Judas.
They were not meant for the crowd.

Baalith.
Then I apologise for over hearing
While your thoughts you were clearing.
Allow me to introduce myself to you.
I serve Annas that noble Jew
He was once your teacher I understand
He now seeks to protect our laws and land.

Judas.
All this I know quite well.
What are you trying to sell?
I perceive that you are after
Something more than pleasant laughter.

Baalith.
You now serve Jesus the carpenter
Who we do feel is not quite Kosher.

Judas.
It is true I follow him.

Baalith.
We believe that he does sin.
He breaks the law that Mosses wrote
And in Caesar's eye he is a mote
But we need proof of this thing
If to justice him we'll bring.

Judas.
For many days now I have felt
That both my braces and my belt
Had failed together when near him
And that my future looked grim.
What must I do, I will you serve
Say it quick or I'll lose my nerve.

Baalith.
Report all he does to Caiaphas.

Judas.
Know you then that upon an Ass
He will ride through the city gate
As if a King in royal state.
Go tell your boss that I am his
That I greet him. Tell him this
While I return to Jesus' crowd
To cheer his way good and loud.

They all exit..

5. ENTRY into JARUSELEM.
Characters.
			Peter John
				    Jesus
			Disciples Crowd.

From far off is heard the sound of Music and cheering. Peter and John run in and address the crowd.

Peter.
Good people, see you here
The new found King is coming near
Pick up your voices in his praise
Allow his message from times long haze
To bring your soul
From out the hole
The devils dug for it.

John.
Take up flowers, strew his path
With him sing, with him laugh
He brings great Gods life
He'll cause old nick no end of strife
So sing, so dance, so joyous be
Allow his light to let you see
That all shall be redeemed.

Jesus, riding a Donkey, enters with his disciples and the crowd waving palms, throwing flowers and singing. Jesus dismounts and greets the crowd. They then disperse leaving Jesus and his followers..

Jesus.
Oh Jerusalem, your time is close
I feel it in the sand between my toes
The wind that blows my hair
That soon the wrath of God shall descend
And all the stones of this place
Shall be turned one from t'other.
The holy temple on its hill
Shall be destroyed.
Oh Jerusalem my tears I shed for you
For through the things that I endure
Shall be over in scant three days
Your destruction shall be till time ends.

Peter.
Master, Jesus my friend
There are matters to which we must attend.

Jesus.
Thank you Peter, we must away
For it is Passover this day.

Peter.
Where do we celebrate this feast
Of when our people were released?

Jesus.
A poor man who carries a jar
Walks close. Tell him who you are
Say to him that we shall use his room
To remember the Egyptians doom
He will show but little surprise
But he'll know you tell no lies.

All exit..

6. the LAST SUPPER.
Characters.
				Man Peter
				John Jesus
				Judas Disciples

A man carrying a Jar enters followed by Peter and John.

Peter.
Good fellow, hold hard,
By heaven my breath is marred.

John.
Good friend, excuse my unfit mate
And his excessive worn out state
Our master, Jesus, will celebrate
This festive time beyond your gate.

Man.
I am honoured that he should eat
Of my bread and my meat.
All is ready, it has been long
Since dreams did say you'd be along.

Jesus and the rest, including Mary Magdalain. and Salomie, settle down to Passover supper..

Jesus.
My friends, time has run its course
Soon we all will face such force
That the very roots of our belief
Shall be plunged into darkest grief.

But now I tell you of a thing
That will make all heaven sing
So when the darkness you do see
Do this and commemorate me.

He picks up some bread, breaks it and passes it around..

This is my body whole
That will nourish every soul
So as you eat it is all me
And it shall set you all free.

He picks up a wine cup..

Do this also as I describe
It is not a thing to hide
For this is my flowing blood
Which very soon will stain the mud.

He passes the cup around. Judas is about to eat and drink..

Judas, do you understand
What you hold within your hand?

Judas.
Yes Jesus, I believe I do.

Jesus.
Then I shall not deny it you.
My flesh and blood you eat and drink
I hope that it will make you think.
All must think on what is done
For know you now that there is one
Who has betrayed me out of hand
Forced me to a legal stand.

Disciples.
Is it I lord? [Following on around]

Judas.
Is it I?

Jesus.
Do you need to ask this thing
Go now, seek out what you must bring
And know my love is still with you
Go, it is time you flew.

Judas Exits.

Peter.
Jesus, why let him go?
I don't understand, I want to know?

Jesus.
All things that are done this day
Are like things long modelled in clay
Forming into this tapestry.
All is how it should be.

Peter.
I had my doubts right from the start
About the trueness of his heart.

Jesus.
Peter, do not mock our wayward friend
What he does is for an end.

Peter.
All I meant is his betrayal
Was clear, like a torn sail
I knew he would do something bad
And I was feeling rather sad.
Still at least I won't do such things
My loyalty is a bell that rings.

Jesus.
Oh Peter, Peter if you but knew
Of the thing that you will do.
Before the cock has met the morning,
Now listen close to this warning,
Before the cock does cease to crow
Three times you'll deny me so.

Peter begins to protest but Jesus silences him.

Jesus.
No Peter,, not a word
Just think upon that fateful bird.
Now good fellows our feast is done
The moon soon shall replace the sun
So we must get out and prepare
To do the things that we dare.
A garden waits for us to come
Our given duty we shall not shun.

To the jar man..

Noble sir you have served us well
But in this place we must not dwell.
I thank you for your trouble great
You are now and always my good mate.

Jesus and the man embrace. They all exit..

7. the GARDEN and BETRAYAL.
Characters.
			Jesus Peter
			John James
			Angle Baalith
			Judas Man
			Mary Lillith
			                   Crowd

Jesus, with Peter, James and John enter.

Jesus.
In this place we shall prepare,
Examine all we have to bear.
Wait and pray you by this stone
While I go farther on alone.

Jesus leaves them and they immediately settle down and sleep. Jesus kneels to pray..

Oh father, lord of all creation
Hear me as I take this station.
The cup of which I must drink
The draft that takes me to the brink,
Is a terror to endure.
Father, of this thing I am not sure.

He prays silently a moment then goes back to Peter and friends..

Peter, awake.

Peter.
This-is-a-thing. oh master,
I was dreaming of sure disaster.

Jesus.
I left you three here to pray
Not to morpheious a visit pay.

John.
I'm sorry Jesus, it just happened
We did begin to pray and.

James.
And the rigors of the day took hold.
We shall now do as we are told.

Jesus leaves them again to continue praying.

Jesus.
Father, once again I say
Let this cup be took away
Let me seek another course
From this action me divorce.
I am not worthy this thing to bear
It needs one of courage rear
I do fear I have it not.
Is this truly to be my lot?

He returns to his companions who are asleep once more. He lets them sleep.

Jesus.
Sleep then good yeomen stout
Your minds are strong but bodies just give out.

He returns to his prayer and is greeted by an angle with a cup.

Jesus.
Noble creature made of light
Why visit here with me this night?

Angel.
I hold before you a cup fine wrought
Fashioned in the blood it has court
Your holy father, God almighty
Shows to you all sin unsightly
Will you drink full of this cup
Freeing all by what you sup
Or smash it here upon the ground
So you, like them, may sleep sound.

Jesus snatches the cup and makes to smash it. Slowly he lowers it and drinks its contents. The angle takes back the cup and exits.

Jesus.
So, it is done
Father, you have won.
That which is called of me
So my father, let it be.

There is a commotion off which wakes the disciples. The mob enter lead by Baalith. Lillith and Mary are in the crowd..

Baalith.
Hold fast, put forth the one we seek
The one whose future is now bleak.
Jesus the Carpenter, where is he
Tell us, and well let you be.

Jesus.
I stand before you
In full knowledge of what you do
Jesus of Nazareth as you planed
Before you here does stand.

No-one moves.

Jesus.
Who do you seek if not me?

Judas.
Jesus.

Jesus.
Hallow Judas, I've been expecting you.

Judas.
This is a thing that I must do.

Jesus.
Then do what must be done.

Judas steps up to Jesus and kisses him..

Baalith.
The sine he gave with that kiss.
Secure the man, do not miss.

Peter.
No hand upon him lay
Or with your blood you will pay.

Peter flies at the crowd with his knife drawn. He cuts a mans ear off.

Jesus.
Peter put up your knife
This is not the way to life.
For he who lives by the sword
Shall die by it upon the sward.

He goes to the injured man.

Jesus.
Let me see the wound he made
With this his ever sharpened blade.
It is not great, see, here now
It is repaired, don't worry how.

Man.
As you say it is repaired
Your actions make me true afear'ed.

He exits fast..

Baalith.
Seize him, bind the traitor fast
Then drag him to his last
When he has answered to Caiaphas.

They bind Jesus and drag him away. The disciples scatter except for John who goes to comfort the Mary's. Lillith stands apart watching them.

Mary.
Jesus, my son, is dragged away forlorn
His fate sealed since he was born
Is now enacted out.
Willingly. He did not shout,
Willingly he went secured
All their violence he endured.
Why in all of great Gods names
Did you not stop these games
That you have witnessed here?
Was it hate, was it fear,
Whatever in their minds did ring
To make them do such a thing.

John.
Mother of my master
We must leave this place
Better that we do so faster
So to prepare your sons case.

They exit past Lillith who hold out a hand to them. It is not taken and she is left alone and confused. She exits..

8. the TRIAL.
Characters.
			Three guards Jesus
			Caiaphas Annas
			Peter Woman
			Serving Girl Man.
						Crowd

Enter Caiaphas and Annas dressed in full pomp. Jesus is dragged in by three Guards. The crowd gathers..

1st.Guard.
In old trot, on I say
You are the guest at this here play
Now get you on, don't delay

Jesus is stood before Caiaphas and Annas..

2nd.Guard.
Good lords, our nights work is done
And sure we had a lot of fun
Bringing this man before you both
For you to deal with on my oath.

3rd.Guard.
Here lords, you should have heard
Listen to what occurred
I heard him say with my own ears
A thing that I laughed into tears.

1st.Guard.
I heard it too, what a giggle
He gave me pains in my middle
He said our temple he would destroy
Then he said, now listen boy,
The in three days he'd build it new
What a comic eh, Yar-boo.

Caiaphas.
If this is so then by our plans
He has played straight into our hands/
Stand back from him, let him be,
Let him stand where I can see
Our exam of him shall be fair
And to the law we'll pay much care.

Annas.
Beware my friend he is clever
He may well slip our legal tether.

Caiaphas.
All this I understand
Everything goes now as planed.
You, carpenter, they say you are the King
That all Israel is now waiting.
What say you of this heavy charge
Brought on you while still at large?

Jesus looks them in the eye and stays silent.

Caiaphas.
Ho sir, what does this silence mean
Answer now, come you clean.

Annas.
This silence is his cunning
Makes his presence seem more stunning.

Caiaphas.
The insolent dog does me gall
Standing silent and so tall
I am tempted to bind his wrists
Then beat out answers with my own fists.
Guard, he does stand to proud
Playing to this watchful crowd
Sit him down on lowly stool
As befits a jesting fool.

Jesus is forced onto a stool..

Now answer all I've put to you.
Come, answer, it is your cue.

Annas.
I fear that in these matters
You will force your case to tatters
Allow me with my experience
This puss filled boil to lance.

Caiaphas.
It is true that my skill
Is more attuned to the Toras will.
Go to it then, find a way
That we can make this varlet pay.

Annas.
Man, Jesus, Rabbi good,
Certain things are understood
To be spoken all around.
Help us silence this sad sound.
That say you are Gods own son
Well are you, in truth, that one?

Jesus.
As you have spoken
That truth can-not be broken
So you will know the truth of it
When at the throne where God does sit
You will see my father in all splendour
And there, to me, the truth you'll tender.

Caiaphas.
Riddles, riddles nothing more
Well we shall even up the score
I am displeased with what you've sung
Guards, come loosen up his tongue.

The guards take over.

1st.Guard.
So as usual it's left to us
To learn such things without much fuss.

2nd.Guard.
Look you mates what I have here
A simple cloth to instil fear
With it we shall bind his eyes
Then see if he prophesies.

3rd.Guard.
What wisdom shall we extract
That we have all here lacked?

1st.Guard.
We shall hit him hard and fast
Then he can tell us who was last
To smote him one across the back
That's the way to give him flak.

Jesus is blindfolded and the guards begin to push him around.

2nd.Guard.
Come on King, let us know
Which of us this punch did throw?

They and the crowd continue taunting Jesus with cries of Prophesy.

Caiaphas.
Enough, stop now this game
In holy Gods very name.
It is quite plane to me
That temporal power is to be
The path that his wrongs shall right
So take him now to Pilates sight
For him to try as he will
We'll let the Romans him kill.

They begin to lead Jesus away. Peter, who has been in the crowd, tries to see what's happening. He is challenged by a woman.

Woman.
Hay there, you that smells of fish
Was it not of your own wish
To follow him, that Jesus man
And told us that we all can.

Peter.
Me? No woman you are mistook
I'm just here to take a look
I am nought to do with him
Be off with you and your mad whim.

Servant Girl.
You know I think you may be right
He was there the other night
When Jesus came through the gate
You are Peter, his old mate.

Peter.
Girl, that was not me I say
Now will you please go away.

Peter moves to another part of the stage..

Man.
You. You are part of his gang
Part and parcel, dop and tang.
Your the one who sliced an ear
Lunging out in blind fear.
I'd remember you okay
Till my very dying day.

Peter.
How much louder must I cry
That man was not I.

As he shouts the last line the cock begins to crow. Peter and Jesus exchange looks. Peter, realising what he has done exits distraught. Jesus is dragged off.
All exit..

9. PILATE.
Characters.
				Lucifer Baalith
				Lillith Annas
				Pilate Caiaphas
				Jesus Herod
				               	Crowd.

Lucifer and Baalith enter.

Lucifer.
This day does not go our way
If Jesus dies all hell will pay.
Our long held fight will be no more
God will win by a healthy score.
Go to Pilate and make sure
That prison is what's in store
For Jesus so he'll be forgot
As in the dark he does rot.

Baalith.
I shall take the guise of Pilates aid
Be sure in prison the Nazarene's laid.

They exit. Lillith, who has been listening, enters..

Lillith.
So that's there game.
The runners now are in the frame
If Jesus does not die for all
Then evil shall be the rule.
Although I am a fiend of hell
I know only to well
That I must thwart my masters plan
In any way that I can.
Jesus must suffer on that cross
So when we count his lives loss
The price was right
And all the world will bathe in light.

Jesus is lead in followed by the crowd. Lillith merges with them. Pilate, accompanied by Baalith, enters. Caiaphas and Annas face him.

Annas.
Lord Pilate, governor of this land
Tuberous Caesar's right hand
We greet you in all honour sir
And bring before you this vile cur.

Baalith.
Beware my lord of their guile
It stands out half a mile.
Their after something you can bet
What ever they say you stay set.

Pilate.
Silence. I know how to deal
How to bring mere Jews to heel.
Lord Annas, lord Caiaphas, welcome here
But what matter draws you near.

Annas.
Both laws of Caesar and of God
Have he broken, don't spare the rod.
This man to hell we must toss
So hang him high on a cross
For he has called himself a King
Sought for himself the diadems ring
Can you, who stands in Caesar's name
Not punish such extreme blame?

Baalith.
This is the time to be aware.

Pilate.
So I see, I will take care.
Jesus, they say you call yourself
A king great, so where's your wealth
I see you dressed in cheep home-spun
Hardly garb for the great one.
Tell me, are you a King
And what armies do you bring?

Jesus.
Pilate, I tell you here, now, straight
That I have a place beyond heavens gate
Kept for me by my father good
Who, if he thought he should,
Would prove his heavenly intent.
No Kinglyness do I invent.

Baalith.
There lord is your way out.

Pilate.
Be silent or bear a clout.
We have this man examined now
And can-not see just how
You can find fault of deed.
His innocence we do coincide.

Caiaphas.
Pilate, if you let this man go
Great Caesar will have to know
Of the weakness of your act
I do not jest, this is a fact.

Pilate.
Then what should I charge him with?

Annas.
Anything that means he does not live.

Pilate.
If this man brakes your laws
Then deal with him upon you floors.

Caiaphas.
We do not want this man
As King, it would be a sham.
No overlord shall be ours
But Caesar in his Roman towers.

The crowd. egged on by Lillith, begin chanting Caesar..

Baalith.
My word, they do seem adamant
Why not to Herod have him sent
That way you can pass the buck
And there it ends with any luck.

Pilate.
Your plan shows merit,
I wonder if they would wear it?
Good sirs, please do tell me
Is this a man of Galilee?

Annas.
Yes, that is his home
As surly as yours is Rome.

Pilate.
Sirs, this matter is not mine
The job of this to define
Is set at you king Herod's feet
He will be you judge complete.

Pilate and Baalith exit. Herod and Lucifer enter the other side..

Herod.
Noble Doctors of God and Law
What brings you knocking at my door
Does me honour to great extent
As does lord Pilates warm intent.
Now, man, Jesus is his name?
Well my friend, what's the game?
Let me tell you what I'll do
I shall, in time, release you
If you just show me one small trick
We can end this all real quick.
Just one small miracle here for me
And I will set you totally free.

Jesus looks Herod in the eye and stays silent..

Well, pull your finger out
We are waiting all about.

Jesus is unmoved..
Defy me will you then
When I tell you when
Your insolence shall be dealt
By burning strokes from a belt.
Guard, thrash him hard.
Turn his back to putrid lard.

1st.Guard.
Oh friend you should have spoken
Now you back shall be broken.

Jesus is wiped by the three Guards..

Lucifer.
Beware my King, he must not be killed
Or Pilate, whose anger is like water chilled
Shall have your head on a spike
And that's not something you would like.

Herod.
Enough I feel, stop you flails
Put away you cat-o-tails.
Return him to lord Pilates place
Say I greet him with good grace
And bow to him his judgement great
That has the power of the Roman state.

Caiaphas.
He will not like this act.

Herod.
Is that a fact?

Herod and Lucifer exit. Pilate and Baalith enter.

Annas.
Sir, King Herod sends him back
Saying this case is yours to crack.

Pilate.
Does he so, then I say again
That to me all this is plan
There is no fault I can find
That Rome's law can him bind.
Herod neither could find fault
Else why back here should he be brought.
Therefore I say let him go.

Annas.
Crucify him, make a show
Of Roman strength within this land.
The cross for him we do demand.

Lillith.
Nail him to a cross, crucify him.

The crowd take up the call with Lillith wiping them up.

Pilate.
Think hard upon you cry
Ask yourselves the reason why?

The crowd quieten..

A tradition I do now enact
As part of Passovers pact
A prisoner shall be reprieved
And I will sleep much relieved.
Who shall walk amongst us
Jesus or Barabus?

Lillith.
Barabus, free Barabus.

The crowd take up the call for Barabus.

Pilate.
So be it, Barabus is your choice
With such a strong clear voice.

Baalith.
Lord you can-not allow this action
It will empower his faction
If they've a martyr for their cause
It will grow without a pause.

Pilate.
I have tried all I can
To win the freedom of this man.

To Caiaphas and Annas.

I appeal to you once more
With all Rome's power I do implore
Do not ask this thing of me
Let this innocent go free.

Annas.
He must die.

Caiaphas.
You must him Crucify.

Pilate.
Jesus, say to me now
If your a King then tell me how.
Are you King of the Jews?

Jesus.
Tell me, what are your views.
Do you believe in what I am
Or do you think I am a sham?

Pilate.
How can I judge
When you will not budge.

Jesus.
Then I tell you that my kingdom
Does not exists beneath Earth's Sun
But is with my father in heaven.
A King I am of power that will leaven
All earthly things in time,
That Kingdom indeed is mine.

Pilate.
Then King you are?

Jesus.
Born beneath a star.

Pilate.
I do not need your riddle.

Jesus.
Know then that I stand in the middle
Of this world and that to come.
And when this world is all done
My fathers kingdom shall reign supreme.

Pilate.
There is no fault I can glean.
This man is clean.

Annas.
The law he flouts I tell you still
You must do great Caesar's will.

Lillith.
Crucify him.

She whips up the crowd again. Pilate sends for water.

Pilate.
Know you this!!
With this act this innocent blood
Which now shall flow in flood
I wash from my hands.
His death shall be on your lands
And its curse shall burden you all
Until the mountains do fall.
Take him to the hill
His destiny to fulfil.

Pilate exits. The Guards drag Jesus out past Lillith who reaches for him. All but Lucifer, Baalith and Lillith exit..

Baalith.
Did you see what she has done
Put the ky-bosh on our fun.

Lucifer.
Oh Lillith you silly girl
You've put my plans in such a whirl.
What do you think you were at
Calling for his death like that.

Lillith.
He has to die
And you know why.

Baalith.
Here, boss, she's gone and turned
I think it's long since she was burned.

Lucifer.
No, no, minion mine
We'll let the punishment fit the crime.
Grab her.

They exit with Lillith struggling to escape..

10. the CRUCIFIXION.
Characters.
			four Soldiers Jesus
			Mary Mary Magdalain
			John Lucifer
			Baalith Lillith
			God Four Angles.
					     Crowd

Four soldiers enter with Jesus carrying a cross. Mary, Mary Magdalain, and John are in the small crowd that gathers.

1st.Soldier.
Come on man what's the delay
We only get just one days pay
If we don't do this matter fast
At the cookhouse we'll be last.

Jesus puts the cross down and collapses to one side.

2nd.Soldier.
Now then my brothers gather here.
Here's a jest you'll find quite queer
Although to me was given the job
This fellows life here to rob
I've never done a thing like this
It seems a little hit or miss.

3rd.Soldier.
Don't you worry over that
I know how to skin this cat
Onto the wood we him nail
What's up, you look quite pail.

2nd.Soldier.
No, no I'm all right now
You had better show us now.

4th.Soldier.
Come on you two what's the game
What we do is very plain
This fellow we lay on this wood
Then nail him down the way we should
As described in regulations
A prescribed way for all occasions.
So, with no more fiddle- faddle
This cross this varlet will bestraddle.

They go to drag Jesus to the cross but he beats them to it and lays down of his own free will.

1st.Soldier.
Well there's a sight I've never seen
For his own death he must be keen.
Okay lads no more shirking
Let's bend our backs and do some working.

2nd.Soldier.
In this bag are ropes and hammer
Even a three inch witworth spanner
But nails do not come to hand.

3rd.Soldier.
Well isn't that just simply grand.

4th.Soldier.
Don't worry I've got some here
The same thing happened just last year
Since that time I've made a rule
To carry spars, I'm no fool.

1st.Soldier.
So then, on which side shall we start?
Which is closer to the heart?

2nd.Soldier.
Does it make a lot of difference
Personally I have no preference.

1st.Soldier.
Then as we stand by his right
We'll bind that wrist to wood tight.
Then with a deft and heavy blow
The nail goes in, just so.

Jesus cries out as the nail is hammered home.

3rd.Soldier.
Is this a thing I can believe
Or do they think that were naive?
The scores that have been placed on here
Are way out, there nowhere near.

4th.Soldier.
Here let me take a look
At what it says here in the book.
No, unless it does deceive my eyes
We will have to improvise.

1st.Soldier.
What's the hold up over there?

3rd.Soldier.
This craftsmanship is far from fair.

4th.Soldier.
We'll have to pull him this way over
The way it's marked it could be Dover
For all the good it does our cause.
Look, let's think it over with a pause.

3rd.Soldier.
No, look if we tie his wrist
And force his fingers from a fist
We can pull him into place
That will settle this here case.

They tie his wrists and pull him into place. The next nail goes in.

1st.Soldier.
That then just leaves his feet
If were to be good and neat.

2nd.Soldier.
I'm afraid bad workmanship
Will make our work rate dip.
For the problem that was up top
Seems to have made the drop.
His feet do not reach the mark
Placed here by some dull spark.

3rd.Soldier.
The remedy must be the same
Though it will cause him much more pain
So lads, to the ropes you get
While I the nail in place will set.

They pull him into place and the third nail goes in.

4th.Soldier.
This job was not so bad
We've done it proud, eh my lad?

1st.Soldier.
All but set him standing up
Then it's down the boozer for a cup.

2nd.Soldier.
Right then, fine, I'll guide the base
While you three lift him into place.

3rd.Soldier.
How come you get the easy bit?

2nd.Soldier.
'Cause I'm the officer and best fit.
Now too his head for a lift
Before we have another rift.

4th.Soldier.
Just a tick, what's this thing
A load of Thorns in a ring?

3rd.Soldier.
I bet I know what that is for
It's a crown to be sure.
After all this blokes a King
Didn't you hear the peasants sing?

2nd.Soldier.
Just put it where a crown should be
So we can finish, let me see.

He takes the crown and jams it on the head of Jesus..

Now that's done we'll raise him high
For all to see who pass here by.

With much puffing and straining they raise the cross into place..

Right, were finished, back to base
Fall in, we'll march and even pace.

1st.Soldier.
Just before we take our leave
There is the matter of his weave
That he wore up the hill
We should play a game of skill
To decide who should get
This over coat, so place your bet.

They throw dice for the tunic..
Mine I think. So what's next?

2nd.Soldier.
How he does it has me vexed
Every time the dice is thrown
The pot is his. Let's go home.

They pack up their equipment and exit. Lucifer and Baalith drag Lillith on. She is tied to a cross.

Lucifer.
So as my plans you seek to thwart
Then to his side you are brought.
Your punishment I decree
Is that you shall ner' be free.
On that cross till the end of time
You in pain will twist and whine
For as you are one immortal
The pain will be much more brutal
So I set you there beside
The man for whose death you cried.
Suffer long silly worm
In this judgement I am firm.

Baalith sets Lillith up on Jesus' right then stands to his left smirking..

Baalith.
Well now Jesus what a sight
Now where is your Godly might.

Lillith.
Jesus, can you hear my voice?
I have made the only choice
Although my sins are great indeed
I had to let the world be freed
Forgive me if I got it wrong.

Lucifer.
Silence worm and suffer long
He'll bring you no comfort.
And here's his mother and his slut.

Jesus[To Lillith.]
I know you've been a fiend of hell
But by your actions I can tell
That Gods own mercy does abound
He and I, we both have found
A place for you in paradise.

John and the two Mary's approach.

Jesus.
John, friend, take my mother
Treat her as no other
Protect her, love her, be her boy
Give to her a sons own joy.

Mary.
Jesus son of my womb.

Jesus.
Mother, I approach my tomb.
Father, forgive them father.

Four Angles approach. Lucifer and Baalith drag Lillith away before they can help her. God m/f follows the angles who station themselves around the cross heads bowed. God looks at Jesus hanging on the cross, turns and exits. Jesus cries after him and dies.

Jesus.
Father! Why have you forsaken me??

A gloom descends and a bell begins to toll slowly. Jesus is removed for burial and all exit..

11. RESURRECTION and ASCENSION.
Characters.
			Jack-o-bin Salomie
			Mary Magdalain. Jesus
			Peter God
			Disciples Angelic Host

The set is in total darkness. The bell has continued to toll and does so until the lights come up. Jack-o-bin enter with a torch.

Jack-o-bin.
By all the heavens this day is dark
No bird does sing, no dog bark
No children play in the park
Our world shivers cold and stark.
This is the day in between
The day of death that we have seen
And the day of promise keen
When God, from sin, men do wean.
We're here beyond the old days gone
Which were told in dance and song
Out of reach of all that's wrong
Of that milling, sieving throng.
Soon the new will glow bright
Signalling the end of night
Look there, it is the new morns light
Here to wash away the blight.
Now the old times here have ended
Gods grace has now descended
To touch our hearts and be blended
Into something new and splendid.

Jack-o-bin exits as the light comes up. The bell is replaced with a dawn chorus. Mary Magdalain. and Salomie enter.

Salomie.
Mary. Mary not so fast
The dawning light is hardly past.
What is the rush you have in you
To do this thing we have to do?

Mary Magdaline.
Our lord Jesus was laid out
With the Sabbath close about
So we could not do the things
To help his soul on its wings.

Salomie.
What about the doorways stone
To seal the tomb across was thrown.
The two of us will never move it
Not the slightest little bit.

Mary Magdaline.
We shall find a way.
Come along we've not all day.
But wait, the stone is gone
Oh, we have tarried over long
The tomb is empty, not a sign
My eyes are full of tears of brine.

Jesus enters disguised as a gardener.

Mary Magdaline.
Sir, good fellow, tell to us
Was this done by Caiaphas?
Our lord Jesus here is gone
This is indeed a mighty wrong.

Jesus.
What was this man to you?

Mary Magdaline.
He was my life through and through.
Since first he offered me his love
Taught me of the world above.
He was the hope of all mankind
Now he's gone my soul is blind.

Jesus.
Woman, do you not recognise me?

Mary Magdaline.
Jesus! Lord, can it be?

Jesus.
Touch me not oh gentle friend
But to the world this message send
That I am here amongst you all
Risen up to give the call
To every woman, every man
The great fulfilment of Gods plan
For today by what you see
All the world is now set free.

Mary Magdaline.
Salomie, do you see the same as I?

Salomie.
If I don't then pigs will fly.

Mary Magdaline.
Master I shall do as bidden
Seek out Peter where he's hidden
John and Andrew, Thomas to
We'll tell them all we've met with you.

All the disciples and people enter to the sound of great rejoicing. Jesus moves away from the crowd.

Jesus.
Now that all have my peace
From this world I seek release
My father now calls me home
No longer this land shall I roam.

Peter.
Lord and friend what shall we do
Now we shall not have you
To guide us in this hostile world
In which we're buffeted and twirled?

Jesus.
Peter, friends, do not fear
The holy ghost is still near
Guidance from above you'll get
So pray and ponder, but never fret.
Now I go to meet my father
With little fuss and no palaver.
Father I am coming
So set those Angles harps a-strumming.

Angles appear from heaven and guide Jesus to the gates where God m/f waits for him. They meet and embrace..

God-m/f
Now the promise is fulfilled
That I did make when Adam sinned
This my only son made man
Who died a willing death so cruel
Did take upon his broad back
All the sins that ever were
And in his way did set a path
For all to follow night or day
His words, they are truly mine
Remember them and you'll be fine.

Jesus and God enter heaven together followed by the Angles. All exit..

13. the LAST JUDGEMENT.
Characters.
			God male & female Jesus
			Lucifer Angle
			Lillith Angelic Host
				         Everyone else

A volley of trumpets sounds out. The Angles appear each with a trumpet. God enters.

God-m/f.
And now the course of time has run
With nothing more to be done
So to this place I'll put and end
And every soul I shall send
Either to a heavenly home
Or in hell it shall grown.

God-m.
My Angles, travel far and wide
Seek out souls on every side

God-f.
Bring them to my judgement place
Where their lives they will face

God-m/f.
For I am God who made all
So now my voice does call
All to reckoning.

Jesus and Lucifer enter.

Jesus.
My father, all is under way
Nothing will be left this day.

Lucifer.
What's this row, I was in bed
It's loud enough to wake the dead.

God-m/f.
Lord of light, lord of darkness
The time has come to confess
All the good and all the bad
That each soul has ever had.

God-f.
So my son stand to my right
To guide the good into the light.

God-m.
And Lucifer who fell by pride
Take your station the other side.

God-m/f.
As the souls do come near
I'll see their love or their fear
Which ever one they do show
Then take them up, or down below.

The angles station themselves with Jesus and demons with Lucifer. All the characters of the plays make their entrance, the goodies go to heaven and the bades to hell.

Lucifer.
It seems that hell is well stocked
To it lots and lots have flocked.
So as time does end its flow
I shall join them down below.

Lucifer and demons go to hell. Lillith enters still dragging part of her cross. She stumbles towards hell. An Angle enters and goes to her..

Angel.
Lillith my old friend
Why this path do you wend?
It does lead to the fire
And many souls now feed that pyre.

Lillith.
That place is where I reside
And I have nowhere else to hide
So to my fate I shall descend
Nice to meet you, 'by old friend.

Angel.
But God and his son Jesus
Did put a charge on each of us
That when we met with you
Wondering around without a clue
We were to treat you very nice
And bring you back to paradise.

The Angle takes Lillith's hand and leads her to Jesus.

Jesus.
It may have taken many days
To learn the error of your ways
But lean you did and we forgive
So now in paradise you'll live.

Lillith's black and tattered cloths are exchanged for Angelic ones and Jesus embraces her.

Jesus.
There is nothing greater known
Than a lost soul that once did roam
Being restored to its families heart
So never again shall it part.

Jesus takes Lillith to God who embraces her. All but God enter heaven.

God-m/f.
And so it is over
I am the Alpha, I am the Omega
The first and most famous.
In my will it should be so
As is, as was, as ever shall be.
I am that God that never had beginning
Nor never will have end.
Maker unmade, all might is in me
For I am the light of the life eternal.

God enters heaven and Peter locks the gate behind him..

THE END.
